The most familiar reading of “The Beatitudes” is from the Gospel of Matthew, but this homily called”Blessed are the Poor” is from the Gospel of Luke. In this Scripture, Jesus is challenging the opinion that most had in regard to the poor. Jesus lifts up the value of the poor, and He tells those who are rich that they are in great danger of losing the rewards of heaven.
Fr. Michael shares Pope Francis’ apostolic discourse, “The Joy of the Gospel,” which is in alignment with this Gospel. Pope Francis brings the attention to the poor, saying that these are God’s children, and we need a conversion of our hearts in regard to them. We must respond to the needs of the poor. Fr. Michael then shares the great example of the life of St. Peter Claver, a great saint who served the poor.
