Are you Levi the tax collector or Peter the fisherman?
In today’s Gospel reading and homily, we hear the story of Jesus calling Levi, later named Matthew, and dining with other tax collectors to the dismay of the Pharisees and of Peter.
In the 2013 issue of America Magazine, Pope Francis reminds us that piety and sinfulness are not mutually exclusive. Peter objects to the call of Levi because his own self-image blinds him to the sinful nature present in us all. Fr. Michael concludes: We must “allow God’s grace to penetrate the darkness of our hearts” and to “trust in the infinite patience and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
