Fr. Michael shares the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus admonishes the crowds to do what the Scribes and Pharisees teach, but not what they do.
Jesus continues to spell out all that the Scribes and Pharisees demand of others but do not expect of themselves. He adds that they also make a show of their public appearance and stature such that they appear above everyone else. But Jesus commands, you shall have no father except your Father in Heaven.
Fr. Michael likens this command to the humility requried in our modern age to belong to a shared community of faith. Being spiritual is not enough, we need to respond to the Father’s call.
