“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So, do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29–31
What do you think the world’s population is at present?
5 billion? 6 billion? 7 billion?
The United Nations’ latest estimate of the world’s population is 7.8 billion people. In a sea of so many faces, it’s easy to assume that God doesn’t have time to listen to our struggles, to one more sad story of woe.
But here’s the thing, if we assume that God doesn’t care or is just too busy running the universe, then our worries become twice as burdensome. If the God we worship is always looking after someone else and never has time for us, then we’re basically left to fend for ourselves. Why bother praying? It’s essentially a waste of time.
But Jesus tells us that this kind of god is way too tiny. He invites us to imagine a god who is GOD. Jesus reassures us that the real God, Our Heavenly Father, is infinitely aware of all the needs of all His creations, even the flight and fall of the smallest sparrow. In fact, Jesus reassures us that even the hairs on our head are counted. Admittedly God’s counting job is easier on some of our heads than others! But the point is that God knows us and our needs better than we know ourselves.
Jesus reminds us that, however long we walk upon this earth, our footsteps are heard by the one who gave us the ability to walk. So, let’s change the channel of our thoughts from worry to praise. Let’s raise our gaze to the heavens. Let’s stand in the assurance that each step we take is a gift. Every breath we breathe is a blessing. Every blink of our eyes is an invitation to remember that we will one day look upon the face of the One who looks on every human face – with love!
To Him, we are one in a trillion.
